Barnett Hill hosts charity plant sale
20 May 2010
Barnett Hill in Wonersh is holding a plant sale on Sunday 30th May in aid of the Surrey Wildlife Trust. The venue raised over £1000 for the trust last year, selling its highly sought-after plants to the public.
Della Connelly, our estate manager, thinks the timing of the plant sale is part of what makes it such a success each year. “We like to hold our spring sale after the Chelsea Flower Show because many people get inspired to improve their gardens after seeing all the colourful plants on the television coverage of the show. We have also timed it to coincide with the launch of our Traditional Sunday Lunches at Barnett Hill”
Among the plants for sale are some for the ‘Grow your Own’ brigade, Della said. “Last year we experimented with growing some vegetables for use in the kitchens which proved very popular with our chefs and customers. We will be selling some of our excess plants at the sale and we have 8 different varieties of tomato, as well as peppers, courgettes and beans, amongst other things.”
On the hardy plant area there is a wide range of herbaceous plants, all propagated from stock growing on the estate. There are also shrubs, grasses, bedding and some half-hardy exotics to give the garden a more tropical feel or make it feel a bit more like summer at least.
The sale is free to attend and takes place from 10am to 12pm. For further information or to book a table for lunch, please call 01483 893361.
